Explained connections
- "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
Jesus cries the opening line of Psalm 22 from the cross, in Aramaic. Quoting a psalm's first line evoked the whole psalm, which moves from abandonment and mockery to vindication and worldwide praise — so the cry is both real anguish and a claim on the psalm's ending.
- Heads wagging at the cross
The psalmist describes onlookers who laugh, sneer and shake their heads. Matthew notes passers-by doing exactly this at Golgotha, one of several details he takes from Psalm 22 to show the crucifixion unfolding as Scripture described.
- "He trusted in God; let him deliver him"
The psalmist's enemies taunt that he trusted the LORD, so let the LORD rescue him. The chief priests unknowingly speak almost the same words at the cross — Matthew lets the irony stand: the mockers are reciting the psalm of the righteous sufferer.
- Dividing the garments
Matthew records the soldiers dividing Jesus' clothes by lot. All four Gospels mention the scene, and the detail anchors Psalm 22 as the primary scriptural lens the evangelists used for the crucifixion.
- Gall and vinegar
The psalmist complains that enemies gave him gall for food and vinegar to drink. Matthew describes Jesus offered wine mixed with gall, which he refused, matching the psalm's language closely.
- With the rich in his death
Isaiah says the servant's grave was assigned with the wicked and with a rich man in his death. Matthew notes that a rich man, Joseph of Arimathea, laid Jesus in his own new tomb after he was executed among criminals.
- The potter's field
Zechariah throws the silver to the potter in the house of the LORD. Matthew says the priests used Judas' returned silver to buy a potter's field; he attributes the quotation to Jeremiah, likely because he blends it with Jeremiah's potter and field-purchase passages (Jer 18–19, 32).
- Graves opened
God promises to open Israel's graves and bring them up. Matthew alone reports tombs opening at Jesus' death, a startling sign that the age of resurrection had begun.
- The veil torn in two
The veil separated the Most Holy Place, where only the high priest entered once a year. At Jesus' death it is torn from top to bottom — by God's hand, not human — opening access to God's presence.
- The betrayer hangs himself
When his plot fails, Ahithophel goes home and hangs himself. Judas does the same after betraying Jesus. They are the only two people in Scripture said to die this way, completing the David–Jesus parallel.
- A stone sealed over the pit
A stone is placed over the lions' den and sealed so nothing can change Daniel's fate; next morning he is alive. The authorities seal the stone over Jesus' tomb — and on the third day it is empty.
