Explained connections
- The baptism of Jesus
Matthew and Mark both describe heaven opening and the Spirit descending like a dove. Mark's word is vivid: the heavens were 'torn open' — the same verb he uses for the temple veil at Jesus' death.
- The Spirit in bodily form
Luke adds that the Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove, while Jesus was praying — Luke often notes Jesus praying at key moments.
- The beginning of the gospel
Mark opens his Gospel with this prophecy (blended with Malachi 3:1) before introducing John the Baptist. Starting with Isaiah's new-exodus promise frames everything that follows as God's long-awaited return.
- Mark's opening quotation
Mark begins with Malachi 3:1 combined with Isaiah 40:3 under Isaiah's name. Pairing them introduces John as the forerunner of both new exodus and the Lord's coming to his temple.
- The dove after the waters
After the flood a dove returns to Noah with an olive leaf, a sign of a renewed world. The dove at Jesus' baptism has long been read as signalling a fresh start for creation.
- Show yourself to the priest
Leviticus prescribed rites for a healed leper to be declared clean. Jesus heals a leper by touch and sends him to the priest with Moses' offering as a testimony — the law's procedure now confirming a new power to cleanse.
