Explained connections
- Not all obeyed the gospel
Paul quotes the same opening line in his discussion of Israel's response to the gospel. Isaiah had already lamented that the message was not believed, so present unbelief does not mean the message failed.
- Whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Joel promises deliverance to everyone who calls on the LORD's name. Paul quotes it to insist there is no distinction between Jew and Greek — and by applying it to Jesus he identifies Jesus as the LORD on whom people call.
- The one who does them shall live
Leviticus promises life to those who keep God's statutes. Paul calls this the righteousness of the law and contrasts it with the righteousness of faith described in Deuteronomy 30.
- Who shall ascend into heaven?
Moses says God's command is not hidden in heaven or across the sea but near. Paul reads it of Christ: no one needs to bring Christ down or up from the dead, because he has already come and risen.
- The word is near you
Moses tells Israel the word is in their mouth and heart. Paul identifies it as the word of faith he preaches: confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him.
- Beautiful feet of those who bring good news
Isaiah celebrates the messenger running to Zion with news of peace and God's reign. Paul uses it to stress the need for preachers: people cannot believe without hearing.
- Their sound went into all the earth
Psalm 19 says creation's silent witness reaches the whole earth. Paul borrows the line for the spread of the gospel, arguing Israel has heard the message.
- Provoked to jealousy
In Moses' song God says he will make Israel jealous through a 'non-people'. Paul sees this in the Gentiles' reception of the gospel, hoping it will stir Israel to faith.
- Found by those who did not seek me
Isaiah has God say he was found by those who did not seek him. Paul applies it to the Gentiles who embraced Christ without having pursued God's law.
