Explained connections
- The root and offspring of David
Isaiah foresees a shoot growing from Jesse's stump, a new king from a cut-down dynasty. Near the end of the Bible Jesus calls himself both the root and the offspring of David — David's source and his descendant.
- The Spirit rests upon him
The coming branch of Jesse will have the Spirit of the LORD resting on him. At Jesus' baptism the Spirit descends and comes upon him, marking him as the Spirit-anointed king Isaiah described.
- The Gentiles shall hope in him
Isaiah says the root of Jesse will stand as a banner to the peoples and the nations will seek him. Paul closes a chain of quotations with this verse to show that the Messiah's reign over Gentiles was always God's plan.
- The earth full of the knowledge of the LORD
Isaiah ends his vision of peace with the earth full of the knowledge of the LORD like the waters cover the sea. Habakkuk repeats the line almost word for word, a shared hope across the prophets.
- The wolf and the lamb
Isaiah pictures predators and prey living in peace under the coming king. He returns to the image in his new-creation chapter, showing restored peace as part of God's final renewal.
