Explained connections
- Noah, a preacher of righteousness
Noah found grace in God's eyes. Peter calls him a preacher of righteousness, preserved with seven others — evidence that God knows how to rescue the godly.
- Balaam's donkey speaks
Balaam's donkey speaks to stop him. Peter mocks false teachers as following Balaam, who loved wrongful gain and was rebuked by a mute animal speaking with a human voice.
- Angels who sinned
Second Peter 2 and Jude share much material: fallen angels kept in chains, Sodom, Balaam, and scoffers. Scholars generally think one used the other.
- Sodom as a warning
Both letters cite Sodom and Gomorrah as an example of judgement, in very similar wording.
- A dog returns to its vomit
Proverbs uses the crude image for a fool repeating his folly. Peter applies it to false teachers who escaped corruption and then returned to it.
