Explained connections
- Sarah's faith
Sarah bears Isaac in her old age at the time God promised. Hebrews credits her faith: she considered him faithful who had promised.
- Cast out the bondwoman
Sarah demands that Hagar and Ishmael be sent away so that Ishmael will not share Isaac's inheritance. In his allegory of two covenants Paul applies her words: the children of slavery (law) do not inherit with the children of promise.
- In Isaac shall your seed be called
God tells Abraham that his promised line will run through Isaac, not Ishmael. Paul uses it to show that not all physical descendants are children of the promise.
- Offering the son of promise
Hebrews quotes the same promise to show the paradox of Abraham's test: God asked him to sacrifice the very son through whom the promise ran. Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead.
