Explained connections
- Salem is Zion
Melchizedek is king of Salem. Psalm 76 places God's tent in Salem and his dwelling in Zion, identifying Salem as early Jerusalem.
- Melchizedek, king and priest
Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God Most High, blesses Abraham and receives a tithe. Hebrews notes his name means 'king of righteousness' and that Genesis records no genealogy for him, making him a fitting figure of Christ's timeless priesthood.
- Bread and wine
Melchizedek brings out bread and wine to Abraham. From the early church onward many Christians have seen a foreshadowing of the Lord's Supper in this priest-king's gift; the New Testament does not make this link explicitly.
