Explained connections
- Elijah prayed and it did not rain
Elijah announces a drought to King Ahab. James says Elijah was a man like us who prayed earnestly, and it did not rain for three and a half years — an example of effective prayer.
- The widow of Zarephath
God sends Elijah to a widow in Sidonian territory during the famine. In Nazareth Jesus reminds his hearers that Elijah was sent to a foreign widow, not to Israel's — and the crowd turns on him.
- He gave him back to his mother
Elijah raises a widow's son at Zarephath and gives him to his mother. Jesus raises a widow's son at Nain, and Luke uses the same phrase. The crowd responds that a great prophet has arisen.
